5B:

1. Who is your classmate, what is the component category, what is the name of the choice?
EXAMPLE classmate Liz, component a My California authors blank blank blank

The classmate I choose was Oksana, component a My California authors Dumas, Major, Chabon and Goldmark.

2. What is something this classmate said about the choice that relates to any of the assignments in projects 2-3?

In Oksana's work she uses the same analytical tool that the class used in assignments 2 and 3. After digesting the readings she has learned a few new things. These things are new to her and she will compare and contrast the new information the the already stocked knowledge she has. In the story about Berkley Oksana learned that the town was built in a specific architectural form called " Berkley Brown Shingle". I did not know this either. So like she says next time Im in Berkley I will have to observe it. I think the both of us will have a new appreciation of the architectural design of the city next time. When you think of "cities" Berkley is one and the story gave her a good fell to the city. Writing these stories about towns and places in California is the same thing we did in 2 and 3, only structured differently. The stories have flare! They are made to read and to enjoy. The assignments are more factual but also could be the foundation for one of these flared up stories.

3. What is something different this classmate said about their choice that you did not realize before when you completed projects 2-3?

Oksana said that the story " Cotton candy mirrors" made her thing of her childhood and all the thing that teach you important lessons in life. Before reading this I did not really spend a lot of time relating the reading to me, more to people in general. I guess I did not realize that there is so much you can compare and contrast about these stories.

4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?

This relates to Freire's idea of dialogue because it is dialogue. The class is interaction and exchanging information on an open ground where we are all teachers and we are all equally students as well. Also by reading Oksana's work I can learn about her and the way she receives information. She looks at some things different than I would but that is all part of learning. I think Freire would agree with me that by observing another person's work you can not only learn the work itself but you learn even more about the author. Learning about the worlds cultural differences as well as differences with your neighbor helps every one to come a step closer as a Global community.

5. How has project 2-3 helped you with the readings of the textbook?

Projects 2 and d3 helped to prep the work for the readings by doing the observing myself. Then when I read My California I had some ideas about the elements that make a town or city or any location in the world different than others. It also helped me to stay organized, it just fell in to place well by setting the assignments up in the order that you did.

5A: Group 1

"909", by Percival Everett

This gives the reader a wonderful and personal perspective of the narrator. This person lives in Riverside co., Badland Ca, is a farmer and tries to ride often on their "mule" Monk. The Narrator is giving insight to his view of this part of Southern California (the area codes of 909, 213, 310,714,323,626) He lives in the desert. It gets up to 108 easily, 95 degrees in the late morning. There was a fire there a while back that the narrator speculates a thief probably began to rid of a stolen car, which he adds that he has less a chance of encountering a thief here then in other area codes. You can gather that the Narrator is content living this life and does not want the life style of the people in LA area. He observes the posh cars on the freeway and says he likes that they look like specks and wants to keep it that way. He compares the Freeway to a clogged septic system; which shows his feelings on the freeway and its drivers.

My favorite quote from this reading is this: "Now on Sunday afternoons, the freeway is jammed with automobiles, platinum blondes in BMWs. SUVs pulling jet skis, Jeeps with three-inch lift kits, sporty purple cars with spoliers and decals of Calvin peeing on someone or thing." (Pg. 124, Everett)

This reading provoked a sense of happiness that there are still many Californians that are not caught up in superficiality. I love the out doors and there is something very freeing about walking through and canopy of ancient trees or just feeling the dirt on your bare feet, that always makes me smile. It specifically reminds me of when I lived in the Presidio in SF. I found such pleasure in walking through the hills. Finding new paths or making new ones my self. I felt close enough to the hussle and bussle of San Francisco and also so far way engulfed in nature that it was the best of both worlds! I miss it... Although I am not a fan of the super hot or the desert I still appreciate it for the beauty it holds.

I never knew the exact meaning of "mule". I always thought it was just a donkey. When really it is half donkey, half horse. Which makes me chuckle because while reading this I had a picture of a full sized man on a some what slow both mentally and physically, little donkey.

"The Line", by Ruben Martinez

The line described in this story is essentially the Mexican Californian border. Before the 1990's crossing the border was easily. It was like a festival. Many people gathered there. Some to cross, some to sell items to the people tyring to cross, inculding sexual gestures. There would be a great soccer game there between rival towns in Mexico. The author uses "Goal"! in this story not only after the soccer game but any time the immigrant's triumph. Every one crossing would all go at once, taking separate trails with their trail guide the "coyotes". It was above a 50% chance you would cross and if caught you just try later that night. In the 90's during a slight recession, the Governor of California Pete Wilson upped the border patrol and struck down on the implication at the Mexican Border and the construction on an actual fence. The Hispanics disliked him and booed him at a the Rose Bowl to show how they felt about his new policy. This decreased the rate of illegal immigration. Illegals now have to go far east into the dark. The way he uses dark also shows the darkness that was brought upon the illegals festival that no longer wails, waiting to cross to a new future.

My favorite quote from this story is, " The border wasn't a border. The line was broken. It was an idea, not a thing." (pg 129, Martinez) This was how he described the border in earlier years. It's true, that one time it was only a idea. Now it is an establishment and a large scale operation.

This story made me think of the Mexicans I'm friends with. I know some people that's parents risked a lot to come to America. They still send money home to their relatives and I some times wonder how my relatives felt immigrating from Ireland and Northern Europe. Also how California was once Alta Mexico. The land that illegal Mexicans now flee to was once their ancestors homeland. I lived in Sonoma for many years, across for General Vallejo's Home, where the white man began to take California from the Mexicans.

I knew barely nothing about the history of the California Mexican border. I learned about the atmosphere in Mexico at night when people were about to run to California. I also did not know that Pete Wilson was the Governor that began the border reformation in the 90's.

"Flirting with urbanismo" Patt Morrison

Morrison sums up Los Angles in a nutt shell, and describes the difference between down town LA and the suburbs. She begins by stating many buildings and features in movies that are all in LA and made to look, some where else for the movie or television show. One being the Flat in Seinfeld, which is not in NY it is in LA. She outlines the difference with the two parts of town; downtown is where you work and suburbs are where you live. There is great public transportation so getting back and forth is easy. Jaywalking in LA is a serious crime and on the LAPD will not let you slide on, found out Regan's Attorney Ed Meese. In the early times when LA was developing Down Town was the place to live, now its too cramped and it is more desirable to have to space possible to build a machine and your own mini park. She names many stars and famous people most which I have never heard of and a few of which I knew. All of them in LA, their achievements or buildings they've built. There are many sights to see in LA and she names many on her top list. All together she loves LA and it still is a place that the narrator is taken away by.

My favorite quote in this reading would have to be on page 140, " And there's a certain acute-angled corner of a building in the Wells Fargo Plaza where I can stand and tilt my head back and-- like a little kid wanting the Ferris wheel to go faster--almost enjoying feeling like I'm about to lose my lunch, gazing at the infinite height of it." Morrison is describing looking up to a large three story jukebox.

This reading reminded me of San Francisco and the Bay area. In contrast people want to live in the cramped city conditions of SF unlike downtown LA. But the Bay area, has so many elements to it. Each city has its own flavor and smell. Its own story to tell and people that can transcribe it. I love the Bay area and have lived here most of my life. I have traveled to many other areas in the world and found there is nothing quit like it, home. After arriving home from three months in Europe although sad to leave I was instantly comforted and glowing with delight to return to the fog in Sf, the 101 and drive up to the wine Country to Sonoma and Santa Rosa. This reading also made me want to explore more of the Bay area.

I had no idea about a lot of information in this reading. I did not know the Seinfeld building is really in LA or how many other locations I had seen in movies and on TV that are all in LA. I never thought too much about it but I would assume that people would want to live down town. I have been to LA but have never explored the the down town area that much. I also learned how serious jaywalking is in LA and will never Jaywalk if I'm there ever.

By comparing Mavericks to Venice Beach we can learn a lot about people. These two beaches not only can teach us about the people that visit these beaches but also about the people who live in these beach towns. Analyzing the beach atmosphere and characteristics of these beaches will connect to our study of humanities may teaching us more about certain geographic parts of the world, in this case beach life.

4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:

A What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point

I think some assumptions or stereo types that people have about Mavericks is that it is this total surf spot! I think many people assume that surf season is all year round there. Also that all the people that live there are surfers. Then when you think of surfing you think pot smoking hippy dudes!

I think when it comes to Venice Beach some stereotypes that come up are the stuck up super fit and attractive people that go there as if it was a meat market! Now this might be some what true for some but there is some much going on there. I also think people because the surrounding cities that they think big money and movie stars left and right. People think that if you are a regular at this beach you see stars every day and there for you "know" them.

B List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point

Both beaches are similar in the respect that they are popular and well know beaches.

Both of them are are good for surfing.

Both of them attract many tourists.

C List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point

There is a profound difference in the waves at these two beaches. Mavericks waves are so big in surf season that it puts Venice's biggest waves to shame!

The traffic flow of people. Venice always has a flow of people, but especially in the summer time. Where Mavericks is mostly calm year round till surf season and when the surfing competitions begin your luck to find parking! People flock world wide to see some of the most famous surfers surf at Mavericks!

The ambiance is different too! Any time of year there is a laid back feel to Mavericks. A certain relaxing quality that it has to it. With the exception to competition time. At Venice Beach it is invigorating year round! There are street performers, musicians, art and much more to see year round. I feel like it is more the busy beach than Mavericks over all.

D Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. .5 point

I know that when winter comes, its big surf time at Mavericks! The dangerous surf there has taken the life of one legendary surfer Mark Foo. I wonder if as ocean levels begin to rise with Global warming how this will effect the surfing conditions at Mavericks.

Venice Beach was renamed in 1905, its original name was Rancho la Ballona. In high hopes of creating a Californian Venice Italy. There were once 16 miles of canals through out Venice Beach. The 16 miles of canals are now gone. They were covered and made in to roads to hold the increase in population and the increasingly popular automobile. I would like to know if there are any plans what so ever to reestablish these canals? I think that would add to the attractions of the beach. I wonder if they could even make room for the creation of these canals.

I read Russell Lemley's blog on Philadelphia and New York and found after looking at 6 or 7 other people's work that all choose SF and LA that he did not. I learned that New York is the #1 most populated city in America! I thought it was up there but did not know it was # 1. I also learned that In 2005, nearly 170 languages were spoken in the city and 36% of its population was born outside the United States." This is great information. Thanks Russell!

connects to your study of humanities. .25 point

Comparing to world cities to one another is a great way to learn more about humanities of the world. The majority of people in the world live in cities, which is why they are so diversely filled with culture. I choose to compare Bombay (which is now called Mumbai) to San Francisco. To cities world know by oceans apart and that are seemingly completely contrasting to one another. I am familiar with San Francisco. I was born there and have spent a few years living there and my entire life frequenting San Francisco. I have never been to Mumbai but would love to some day visit or live there for a while.

4. Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:

A. What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point

I think that when people think of San Francisco world wide, many people think its a very liberal city and that every one that lives there is gay. I have relatives that live in Michigan and some of them (mostly men) think there are just gay guys every where there. Others of my family feel different. I think people think you can only live there if you are rich and there for every one, despite how liberal it is must be stuck up.

Stereotypes of the city Mumbai people think oh every one there is "thank you come again" quick mart guy, they label the residents as terrorists. I on the other hand am saddened by stereotypes period! I don't think people that haven't been there realize the diversity in Mumbai. Just like not every one in San Francisco is gay not ever one is the typical Indian in Mumbai.

B. List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point

Both cities have a few companies that are in the top fortune 500. San Francisco having 6 and Mumbai having 4.
They are both the top earner for that states GDP.
They are both in the top 5 of most touristy cities in their own country.

C. List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point

The culture and religion.
Temperature.
History of modern day civilization colonizing this city.

D. Questioning: What else would you like to know about these places? I know a lot about San Francisco. The few things I know about Mumbai are mostly factual. Like I know that most the people in the white collar work world speak English. In the streets a mixture of Hindi and Marathi are spoken. I'd like to know how many people know how to speak English. I'd like to know how it feel to live there submersed in the city. I'd like to know how it smells, how the air feels and how the people treat you as a foreigner.

I learned a bit about Rachael Court. I learned that she was not born in California and that she is also a "foodie". The fact that she choose "Californian Cuisine" alone tells me of her appreciation for the wide variety of food in California. She did not mention that in San Francisco alone you can get pretty much any food you want and at almost any time of the day! I know because when I lived in SF I was a frequent after club Thai food consumer! I learned that in the 3 years she's lived here she has learned to love California. I think coming from out of state to California has to be an exciting experience. It can also be an intimidating experience if you are not as open to all the flavors of California.

2C: Endangered Sharks

1. Contains a title using the format listed above .25 points

2. Contains the sources you used with links to these sources .25 points

http://www.savingsharks.com/
http://www.sharkwater.com/

3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point

The cool thing that relates us all to sharks is the ecosystem in the ocean that regulates the earths Co2 and oxygen levels. We all should know a little more about the the illegal and legal killing of sharks has decimated the shark population. This effects the fragile ecosystem in the ocean. So this connects all humans to the ocean's top predators because they regulate the ocean and keep it in balance which keeps us alive.

4. Contains the following "analytical elements":

A Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point

Sharks come in all shapes and sizes. In the water they glide effortlessly through the ocean. There bodies seem slick but to a humans touch they are almost like running your fingers on a wet nail file. They are fast and agile and mysterious to us. They pick up on electromagnetic impulses that can come from the magnetic poles of earth, helping them to navigate the ocean floor. Or to pick up on the heart beat of a human or any living creature that might be in range.

B Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

If people don't begin to realize that our wasteful over consumption of the earths resources is throwing the delicate balance that allowed our species to evolve we might not be around much longer. I feel that we need to look at all aspects of the world to evolve beyond this mediocre stage of humankind.

C Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

I choose this subject because I have always had a love and respect for sharks ever sense I found that they were one of the oldest still living creature on earth. They have been here approximately 450 million years! That's before the dinosaurs! I feel this is a great choice because we need to respect these ancient creatures! Also because they have a valuable role in the environment. People have a misconception about sharks and feel they are almost our enemies! I would like to show people that they are not our enemies and that most of them are even more scared of us then we are of them.

There is a huge market in China for shark fin! This is due to cultural beliefs that eating shark fin will transfer their supposed "powers" that keep them form getting sick(which is false) to you. It is a status symbol to eat and serve Shark fin soup. Unfortunately millions of sharks are hunted by long line fishing. Which is when a boat tosses out 30 plus feet of numerous lines all covered in bated hooks. This not only picks up the sharks but many other species that the fisherman does not want. These species die in the lines and are just tossed back in the ocean. The sharks alive or not alive are pulled on the boat their fins are cut off and then they are thrown back in to the ocean to drown, because they cant swim to be able to breath.

D Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point

I know there are some people out there protecting sharks but I would like to know why the people who are illegally killing sharks only for their fins know that what they are doing is wrong?

If they do know its wrong so there realize the impact it makes on the world by messing with the ecosystem?

This museum connects to my study of humanities in a huge way! I can not only learn about Iraq and parts of the middle east through the items that used to be in the museum but about intercultural relations from the story of the destruction and looting of Iraq's National Museum.

4. Contains the following "analytical elements":

A Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? I choose the Iraq National Museum. With this choice I feel a deep sadness that goes along with this museum. I hear the once laughter of kids with their parents mapping their way threw endless information and history, to the know silence and disappear of emptiness after the 2003 looting of the museum.

Before the museum was looted and tore apart it was one of the riches cultural museums in the world! This museum was filled with some of the world's oldest relics! There were items dating from pre-human history like a Neanderthal skull, to some of civilized humans first stone and bone tools. There were items dating back to 4th, 5th Millennium and 4000 BC! It echoed scenes that connect us to the stone age, Mesopotamian , the Neolithic age, Sumerian civilization, the ancient civilizations of Babylon and Assyria, the reign of Hammurabi, all the way up to the blood line of Iraq's to modern day Iraq. I see people looting stealing items that belong to all humans not just Iraq's. This was World history that was destroyed.

B Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

I choose this museum to show how one incident that occurred from two countries at war can impact the entire world. The lose of these price-less artifacts is devastating and every not only the Iraq's citizens.

C Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

I choose this to shine some light on an issue that not many people are aware of. I feel so guilty that my country had some blame in this tragic incedent ! I also think that people need to take a step back and see what we are doing to our selves by constantly being in war. I know life and war have been a constant struggle for resources but when do we learn to love one another? Christians and other religions preach "love thy neighbor" well it is a global community now, so I think its time to look beyond borders.

D Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. The person in charge of the museum has began what is being called the "The Baghdad Museum Project" to help create a virtual Iraq national museum and is asking for any type of help anyone world wide can offer! ( the web page is http://www.baghdadmuseum.org/index2.htm , if you are interested) I wonder if people world wide will successfully pull this project together and if some of the stolen items will also be returned.

3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point

This place connects to the study of Humanities by exploring what "man" interprets as fascinating and sacred. I myself and like any other person who know of the Lechuguilla Cave is well enchanted by it beauty and grace. This place is God like. It to me shows the respect that humans have for mother earth and her beautiful gifts she gives us. Lechuguilla being one of the most stunning natural formations on earth!

4. Contains the following "analytical elements":

a. Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? I chose a cave in New Mexico that is unknown to many. Above this cave it is a desert of roiling rocks and hills. It seems as though nothing could be magnificent there. That is until you go under ground. It is one of the deepest and longest caves on earth and is often referred to as the most beautiful of all caves. The walls are covered in crystals formed by limestone slowly being melted away by sulfur. It is silent down there, cold and serene. It is an untouched sanctuary to cave explorers. The walls is scattered with light from the hanging crystals. Some are clear as air some yellow pink light blue tint. All beautiful and breath taking!

b. Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point

My choice is about what one place I chose and how this represents me in a symbolic way. I made this decision because of my profound love and respect for the earth; and also because I wanted to share this fasinating little known Jewel on earth with others!

c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

I choose this place because ever since I first heard about it I have been fascinated with it. I guess you could almost say obsessed. I feel this is the best choice for a "place" that I could have made because hopefully I will interest another person in the angelic Lechuguilla caves.

d. Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. I know that Cavers drawn by the caves' pristine condition and rare beauty, come from around the world to explore and map its passages and geology. Which so far have been mapped up to 122.4 miles and some passages have been up to the lengths of 489 miles, making this the 5th longest cave in the world! But I would like to know more about the possible life that may exist in the caves.

I learned that our opinions differ greatly from one another on how we view California. He sees blondes, beaches and sunny weather and feels out siders feel the same way. I think that is an outside virew only. Because its never like that all through out Californa. This is related to class because every one has a different view on the same things and thats ok. This class is to broaden people's understanfing about other people. This is a cultural difference. Maybe he was raised in S. Ca. I was raised in the Bay area and SF. I didnt see many hot beach days there. Only fogg and wet suits!
