By comparing Mavericks to Venice Beach we can learn a lot about people. These two beaches not only can teach us about the people that visit these beaches but also about the people who live in these beach towns. Analyzing the beach atmosphere and characteristics of these beaches will connect to our study of humanities may teaching us more about certain geographic parts of the world, in this case beach life.

I think some assumptions or stereo types that people have about Mavericks is that it is this total surf spot! I think many people assume that surf season is all year round there. Also that all the people that live there are surfers. Then when you think of surfing you think pot smoking hippy dudes!


I think when it comes to Venice Beach some stereotypes that come up are the stuck up super fit and attractive people that go there as if it was a meat market! Now this might be some what true for some but there is some much going on there. I also think people because the surrounding cities that they think big money and movie stars left and right. People think that if you are a regular at this beach you see stars every day and there for you "know" them.

Both beaches are similar in the respect that they are popular and well know beaches.



Both of them are are good for surfing.



Both of them attract many tourists.

There is a profound difference in the waves at these two beaches. Mavericks waves are so big in surf season that it puts Venice's biggest waves to shame!


The traffic flow of people. Venice always has a flow of people, but especially in the summer time. Where Mavericks is mostly calm year round till surf season and when the surfing competitions begin your luck to find parking! People flock world wide to see some of the most famous surfers surf at Mavericks!



The ambiance is different too! Any time of year there is a laid back feel to Mavericks. A certain relaxing quality that it has to it. With the exception to competition time. At Venice Beach it is invigorating year round! There are street performers, musicians, art and much more to see year round. I feel like it is more the busy beach than Mavericks over all.

I know that when winter comes, its big surf time at Mavericks! The dangerous surf there has taken the life of one legendary surfer Mark Foo. I wonder if as ocean levels begin to rise with Global warming how this will effect the surfing conditions at Mavericks.


Venice Beach was renamed in 1905, its original name was Rancho la Ballona. In high hopes of creating a Californian Venice Italy. There were once 16 miles of canals through out Venice Beach. The 16 miles of canals are now gone. They were covered and made in to roads to hold the increase in population and the increasingly popular automobile. I would like to know if there are any plans what so ever to reestablish these canals? I think that would add to the attractions of the beach. I wonder if they could even make room for the creation of these canals.

I read Russell Lemley's blog on Philadelphia and New York and found after looking at 6 or 7 other people's work that all choose SF and LA that he did not. I learned that New York is the #1 most populated city in America! I thought it was up there but did not know it was # 1. I also learned that In 2005, nearly 170 languages were spoken in the city and 36% of its population was born outside the United States." This is great information. Thanks Russell!

Comparing to world cities to one another is a great way to learn more about humanities of the world. The majority of people in the world live in cities, which is why they are so diversely filled with culture. I choose to compare Bombay (which is now called Mumbai) to San Francisco. To cities world know by oceans apart and that are seemingly completely contrasting to one another. I am familiar with San Francisco. I was born there and have spent a few years living there and my entire life frequenting San Francisco. I have never been to Mumbai but would love to some day visit or live there for a while.

I think that when people think of San Francisco world wide, many people think its a very liberal city and that every one that lives there is gay. I have relatives that live in Michigan and some of them (mostly men) think there are just gay guys every where there. Others of my family feel different. I think people think you can only live there if you are rich and there for every one, despite how liberal it is must be stuck up.



Stereotypes of the city Mumbai people think oh every one there is "thank you come again" quick mart guy, they label the residents as terrorists. I on the other hand am saddened by stereotypes period! I don't think people that haven't been there realize the diversity in Mumbai. Just like not every one in San Francisco is gay not ever one is the typical Indian in Mumbai.

Both cities have a few companies that are in the top fortune 500. San Francisco having 6 and Mumbai having 4.
They are both the top earner for that states GDP.
They are both in the top 5 of most touristy cities in their own country.

The culture and religion.
Temperature.
History of modern day civilization colonizing this city.

I know a lot about San Francisco. The few things I know about Mumbai are mostly factual. Like I know that most the people in the white collar work world speak English. In the streets a mixture of Hindi and Marathi are spoken. I'd like to know how many people know how to speak English. I'd like to know how it feel to live there submersed in the city. I'd like to know how it smells, how the air feels and how the people treat you as a foreigner.

I learned a bit about Rachael Court. I learned that she was not born in California and that she is also a "foodie". The fact that she choose "Californian Cuisine" alone tells me of her appreciation for the wide variety of food in California. She did not mention that in San Francisco alone you can get pretty much any food you want and at almost any time of the day! I know because when I lived in SF I was a frequent after club Thai food consumer! I learned that in the 3 years she's lived here she has learned to love California. I think coming from out of state to California has to be an exciting experience. It can also be an intimidating experience if you are not as open to all the flavors of California.

The cool thing that relates us all to sharks is the ecosystem in the ocean that regulates the earths Co2 and oxygen levels. We all should know a little more about the the illegal and legal killing of sharks has decimated the shark population. This effects the fragile ecosystem in the ocean. So this connects all humans to the ocean's top predators because they regulate the ocean and keep it in balance which keeps us alive.

Sharks come in all shapes and sizes. In the water they glide effortlessly through the ocean. There bodies seem slick but to a humans touch they are almost like running your fingers on a wet nail file. They are fast and agile and mysterious to us. They pick up on electromagnetic impulses that can come from the magnetic poles of earth, helping them to navigate the ocean floor. Or to pick up on the heart beat of a human or any living creature that might be in range.

If people don't begin to realize that our wasteful over consumption of the earths resources is throwing the delicate balance that allowed our species to evolve we might not be around much longer. I feel that we need to look at all aspects of the world to evolve beyond this mediocre stage of humankind.

I choose this subject because I have always had a love and respect for sharks ever sense I found that they were one of the oldest still living creature on earth. They have been here approximately 450 million years! That's before the dinosaurs! I feel this is a great choice because we need to respect these ancient creatures! Also because they have a valuable role in the environment. People have a misconception about sharks and feel they are almost our enemies! I would like to show people that they are not our enemies and that most of them are even more scared of us then we are of them.

There is a huge market in China for shark fin! This is due to cultural beliefs that eating shark fin will transfer their supposed "powers" that keep them form getting sick(which is false) to you. It is a status symbol to eat and serve Shark fin soup. Unfortunately millions of sharks are hunted by long line fishing. Which is when a boat tosses out 30 plus feet of numerous lines all covered in bated hooks. This not only picks up the sharks but many other species that the fisherman does not want. These species die in the lines and are just tossed back in the ocean. The sharks alive or not alive are pulled on the boat their fins are cut off and then they are thrown back in to the ocean to drown, because they cant swim to be able to breath.

I know there are some people out there protecting sharks but I would like to know why the people who are illegally killing sharks only for their fins know that what they are doing is wrong?

If they do know its wrong so there realize the impact it makes on the world by messing with the ecosystem?

This museum connects to my study of humanities in a huge way! I can not only learn about Iraq and parts of the middle east through the items that used to be in the museum but about intercultural relations from the story of the destruction and looting of Iraq's National Museum.

I choose the Iraq National Museum. With this choice I feel a deep sadness that goes along with this museum. I hear the once laughter of kids with their parents mapping their way threw endless information and history, to the know silence and disappear of emptiness after the 2003 looting of the museum.


Before the museum was looted and tore apart it was one of the riches cultural museums in the world! This museum was filled with some of the world's oldest relics! There were items dating from pre-human history like a Neanderthal skull, to some of civilized humans first stone and bone tools. There were items dating back to 4th, 5th Millennium and 4000 BC! It echoed scenes that connect us to the stone age, Mesopotamian , the Neolithic age, Sumerian civilization, the ancient civilizations of Babylon and Assyria, the reign of Hammurabi, all the way up to the blood line of Iraq's to modern day Iraq. I see people looting stealing items that belong to all humans not just Iraq's. This was World history that was destroyed.

I choose this museum to show how one incident that occurred from two countries at war can impact the entire world. The lose of these price-less artifacts is devastating and every not only the Iraq's citizens.

I choose this to shine some light on an issue that not many people are aware of. I feel so guilty that my country had some blame in this tragic incedent ! I also think that people need to take a step back and see what we are doing to our selves by constantly being in war. I know life and war have been a constant struggle for resources but when do we learn to love one another? Christians and other religions preach "love thy neighbor" well it is a global community now, so I think its time to look beyond borders.

The person in charge of the museum has began what is being called the "The Baghdad Museum Project" to help create a virtual Iraq national museum and is asking for any type of help anyone world wide can offer! ( the web page is http://www.baghdadmuseum.org/index2.htm , if you are interested) I wonder if people world wide will successfully pull this project together and if some of the stolen items will also be returned.

I read Andrea's interpretation of San Francisco. I too am a fan of the city! I felt that her description of the sounds, sights and smells hit home with me! I use to live in Sf and it has been a big part of shaping me in to what I am today!
