2. Tell us 2 things from each person you learned regarding Paulo Freire.
3. Tell us how this information will relate to our study of humanities

The first person I clicked on was Jessica Bozzetto. I learned that we both live very close to school and still are taking an online class! (lol) Also that she wants to learn about other cultures.

After reading what Jessica learned about Paulo Freire I learned that Freire spent time traveling to other countries to spread his views on education. I also learned that at the university of Reclief while studying Law, was where he became interested with the sociology of education. Also that he was in the fight against hunger.

The second person's blog I read was Brenton. His view of California differed from my own. His was more the media's view of what I feel is Southern California. I also learned that he is taking this class for his GE and to learn about the "human race"

I learned form his assignment 1b that it was the Mayor of Reclief that designated Freire as the head of the adult literacy program in Brazil. Also that he wrote 25 books that have been written in 35 different languages.


Reading and reviewing other students information and what they have obtained helps to better understand them. With every individual there is a difference with what is relevant to them. This will also broaden what I learn in the long run in the field of humanities. Humanities is the broad study of humans and their beliefs and actions. This will help because this is learning about another human.

1B Paulo Freire

Paulo Freire is author of an influential book called "Pedagogy of the Oppressed". Freire's book conveys his philosophical thinking's on the current state of education in world. This some what new view along with his activism in Brazil has made him one of the greatest minds and greatest teachers of the 20Th century. Freire grew up in poverty in Brazil during the great depression. An era of significant social and political change and civil movements. In this time in Brazil there was a huge gap in the education of Brazilians. Many could not even read and write and this kept them from participating in any political say in their country; because you must be literate to vote. This influenced Paulo's perception on the type of education available to the lower class.

His book discusses the oppression of education upon people due to their social class, gender or race. Freire criticises the standard method of "banking"in the education system. "Banking" the one sided method of a teacher depositing information in to the students mind lacks accumulation of critical thinking. What he proposes is a two way give and take method in which the student is the teacher and the teacher is the student and visa versa. This asking why am I to learn this will in the end stimulate each party. His method helped him to teach illiterate adults to read and write with in 30 days.

The humanitarian prospect affiliated with the elimination of banking and the replacment with a "give and take" relationship from both student and teacher helps to broaden community. This system brings people of all class, gender and race closer together, to knit a tight community. People every where understanding people of all race, gender and class. This is a path to a greater caring world and population. So we need to ask why? Question authority ( when appropriate) and respect every one's diverse views. We live in a Global community even more in this day and age than ever. And to respect every one's views and to take in, and learn from one an other's experiences humanity will flourish.

1. Colleen, hi!

2. I love the Humanities! I am an artist and a philosopher. I want to delve deeper in to the study of humanities and understand the origins of my beliefs better.

4. I think of a beautiful place not like another. California is my home and I feel that because I was born here and have traveled and lived out of the state, I know it is unique. California has a small chunk of almost every culture on the planet residing here! This makes it a very diverse place to live.

My family is from Michigan and they tend to think the usual sandy beaches and beautiful people stereotype. It is always funny when they visit and it's either raining or cold, They always like " I thought it was spouse to be hot here!" I don't think out of state people maybe realise how unique California is. I know some of my family feel it is a bit over whelming here.

5. I have created a blog before and a web page. I am not pro but I have tinkered around with it here and there.
